Summer may be drawing to a close, but the wedding season is far from over. And ceremonies in cooler times call for a whole new dress code to match.

Play with beautiful tailoring for daytime affairs and make the switch from light pastels to rich berry tones. Look to more embellished fabrics as an alternative to playful florals. They will look luscious amidst the early fall landscape.

It is important to be practical about locations and adhere to prescribed dress codes. You know, the rules about leaving whites and creams to the bride and dressing in early fall colours.

EARLY FALL WEDDING GUEST BEACH WEDDING OUTFITS

Early fall weddings by the sea are all about breezy silhouettes and fuss free shapes. Choose colours to match the glorious sunset and avoid multiple layers to stay cool under the sun. You also want something you don’t mind getting a little bit sandy and salty. Lastly, don’t bother with heels, and opt for a pair of flats or wedges.

1 SEPTEMBER BEACH WEDDING GUEST DRESS WITH FLAT SANDALS

Flat sandals with a dash of gold will perfectly match any September beach wedding guest dress. Especially those in linen. I'm obsessed with this dress in trendy Bronze Mist and this dress in Primerose Pink.

*Finish the look with a rattan clutch.

*When styling this beige laser-cut dress, we need to apply the fundamental rule of letting one statement element shine. The intricate bustline detailing is clearly the focal point, so everything else must play a supporting role. All in all, you never want competing focal points in an outfit.

The metallic gold sandals work here because of the warm-to-warm color harmony principle. Beige contains yellow undertones, and gold is essentially a metallic yellow, creating a monochromatic look that's sophisticated and cohesive.

I specifically chose flat sandals because of the sand. The delicate strapping also maintains the same visual weight as the laser-cut details, following the rule of consistent proportion throughout an outfit.

For the handbag, I'm mixing textures strategically. The raffia clutch provides textural contrast without disrupting the colors. The structured shape is crucial - it adds polish and prevents the natural material from reading too casual. This follows the principle of balancing casual elements with formal ones to achieve that perfect wedding guest sweet spot.

The colour palette of this outfit follows the 60-30-10 color rule in its subtlest form - 60% beige (dress), 30% gold (shoes and hardware), 10% natural raffia tone. This creates a cohesive look that photographs beautifully and won't clash with any wedding party colors, which is essential wedding guest etiquette. The overall effect is polished but not precious, special but not attention-seeking - exactly where a wedding guest should land.

2 MAXI BEACH WEDDING GUEST DRESS WITH SANDALS

Maxi lengths and airy ties are endlessly flattering and really set your heart aflutter.

When it comes to choosing the perfect outfit for an island formal, late summer wedding, or early fall wedding in September, you need an island gown and sandals. The Cult Gaia crochet dress in Lemon Grass will be perfect.

The floor length and fitted bodice give it a touch of sophistication, making it ideal for a wedding party.

As you slip into it, you’ll instantly feel the luxury, promising comfort as you dance the night away.

But what truly sets this dress apart is the golden hand crochet yarn, and sheer fringe, a whimsical detail that adds a playful touch to its elegant design.

The Cult Gaia crochet dress is not just about the front; it’s also a masterpiece from behind. With details on both the front and back, it ensures that you look flawless from every angle, making you the center of attention at any wedding.

Now, let’s talk about the ideal pairing for this dress: the Valentino mid heel mules. The metallic finish adds a touch of luxury, making them the perfect complement to your island formal late summer wedding outfit. Their minimalist design keeps the focus on your fabulous Cult Gaia crochet dress while adding a touch of sophistication to your overall look.

*The Celestial Yellow crochet gown requires a completely different styling approach than traditional wedding guest dresses because texture is doing all the heavy lifting. When you're wearing a dress with this much textural drama - from the intricate crochet pattern to those cascading fringe tiers - the cardinal rule is to keep accessories sleek and sculptural. This prevents the dreaded "craft fair" effect that can happen when you pile texture upon texture.

The gold shell mules are a masterclass in strategic contrast. I'm following the principle of juxtaposition here - pairing organic, handcrafted textures with something ultra-refined and architectural. The shell motif works perfectly for the beach wedding while the metallic finish and clean lines elevate it to evening-attire.

The mule silhouette is crucial - a closed-toe pump would feel too much for the beach, while a strappy sandal would get lost in all that fringe movement. The architectural heel height (not too high, not too low) maintains elegance while ensuring you look modern.

For the handbag, the golden clutch with minimal hardware is a visual palate cleanser. This follows the advanced styling rule that when wearing a bold color like Celestial Yellow, you need one neutral anchor piece to ground the look. The structured shape provides geometric contrast to all those organic curves and movement in the dress. Notice how the gold hardware creates a through-line connecting to the shoes without being too matchy.

The overall effect uses the 70-20-10 principle: 70% statement color (dress), 20% metallics (shoes), 10% neutral (bag), which ensures the look is bold but not chaotic.

3 LINEN DRESS WITH SLIDES AND A HEADBAND

Choice of fabrics is all important for a wedding on the beach. Avoid sequins and too much glitz, and look instead to clean lines that match the beach and low-key surroundings. They can have a print. Or add a headband. Simple accessories, like a headband, will help to make the outfit look extra special.

For a tropical setting, you can bring both into the mix - the print and a headband. Like this!

*When working with a bold tropical print like this palm-patterned dress, I'm employing the principle of color extraction - pulling secondary colors from the print to create cohesion in the accessories. The forest green headband is lifting the exact green from the palm fronds, which follows the advanced styling rule that your accessories should echo, not match, your print. This creates visual harmony without looking like you bought a pre-matched set.

I've paired the dress with the woven raffia slides for a critical reason: print dresses with busy patterns need one textural element to prevent them from reading flat. The natural weave adds dimension and breaks up what could otherwise be an overwhelming amount of pattern. Plus, they are your best option for the sand.

This combination also demonstrates the "high-low" mixing principle - the dressy pumps elevate what could read as a vacation dress, while the golden raffia slides keep it from feeling too precious for a beach wedding. The result is versatility without compromise - you're appropriately dressed for any wedding scenario while maintaining a cohesive look throughout the day.

EARLY FALL WEDDING GUEST FORMAL OUTFITS

If the dress code for an early fall wedding says formal, then really go the extra mile with a proper evening dress or a full skirt.

Be sure to avoid daytime looks with cotton or linen and opt for more luxe styles in silk, taffeta or lace.
