Afternoon Tea Dress Code Guide

Afternoon tea is a formal daytime affair, steeped in tradition and refined taste. But what does one wear to such an occasion? How do you dress for afternoon tea appropriately? The dress code for an afternoon tea party can be a perplexing puzzle, especially when there are discrepancies in the invitation. For example, the invitation is for a high tea, and the dress code is Morning Dress. Or when the host is known for a modern taste and there is no dress code written on the invitation. Does the host plan a proper afternoon tea (formal daytime party) with the standard dress code - Morning Dress, or is the host visualizing something more modern - not smart casual, just more modern?

SPRING OLD MONEY AFTERNOON TEA PARTY OUTFITS

Moments with a dress code demand an equally thrilling new look. Tailored and belted styles cinch in the waist, while fluid fabrics craft an elegant figure in motion as you walk your way to the tea table.

1 BUTTER YELLOW MORNING DRESS WITH BLUE SATIN PUMPS AND PEARL HAIRPINS

Picture yourself in a full midi skirt that sways gracefully with each step, paired with a delicate floral blouse that whispers of spring gardens. True, you are not in the garden, but in the ladies' tea room - freshly painted in trendy cherry-coded red and furnished with vintage pieces you found with the help of an expert.

The cropped butter yellow tweed jacket adds structure and sophistication, creating a silhouette that would be at home in any aristocratic tea room. You are at home, though. Pov, in my home. But let's make it about you. Honestly, I don't know what role to put you in yet - do you want to be my guest or me?

Let's go for the second plot. It's much easier for me to write about the feelings and the scenery a host feels as I experienced it recently.

Anyway, the plot. Let' start with the tea.

The walls glow in a rich crimson hue that reminds you of ripened cherries. The afternoon light streams through tall windows, throwing a warm glow across the space and making the red walls pulse with life. And the black tea table is gleaming with a mirror-like finish that reflects the delicate porcelain pieces arranged upon it.

The green satin sofa looks super comfortable with its deep emerald tones next to the swan on the side table, while the dark rose chairs are always everyones favourite place to sit.

But it will be you who gets to sit on the chair this time - you are the hostess.

You lift the porcelain teapot, its quite heavy, so be carefull not to spill the tea. That's what the girlies will do as you begin pouring hot tea into each cup. The sound is almost musical โ€“ a mild melody accompanying the visual dance of tea cascading into your bone chine. Steam rises in delicate spirals, carrying the complex aroma of your carefully selected spring blend.

You offer the first cup to your best friend, who smiles and says, โ€œThat butter yellow is so you.โ€

But everyone is staring at the three-tiered stand. On the bottom plate, finger sandwiches you made before the guests arrived. The middle tier showcases golden-hued Viennese whirls you baked yesterday. And on the top tier the prettiest dessert's yet โ€“ a carefully curated selection of petits fours that mirror the room's elegant color scheme. Macarons in subtle shades of rose and cream, Ispahan, delicate meringue kisses - white as the swan by the sofa, and a small mousse cake that exactly matches the room's red hue.

The soft red walls glow warmly as spring sunlight streams through the windows, and the faint scent of roses wafts from a nearby vase.

Starting at the bottom tier, you offer sandwiches to your guests. โ€œPlease, help yourselves.โ€

โ€œI want mousse cake,โ€ your cousin says, reaching toward it.

With a bright smile, you step forward, โ€œSandwiches first.โ€

She pouts playfully, her hand hovering mid-air.

The guests around the tea table lean in, taking sandwiches and drinking tea. But your cousin just won't drop her look off the cake. Then, her hand twitches - just a flicker of movement

SHOES: Gianvito Rossi - shop for Gianvito Rossi pumps here (I bought mine around the same time as the jacket and they havenโ€™t remade them in the same colour yet - you can, however, shop for Manolo Blahnik satin pumps in the same hue - here.).

JACKET: butter yellow cropped tweed jacket - mine is super old and sold out. But this one comes close. (You can also buy it here if you are afraid of the tariffs.) And just like mine, it can be bought together with a matching skirt.

BLOUSE: high neck floral blouse - mine is sold out and I know you will love this one more.

SKIRT: butter yellow full midi skirt - shop for similar here. Or get this tulle butter yellow skirt.

ACCESSORIES: pearl hair pins - shop for similar here.

TEAPOT: bone china tea pot - shop for the most exceptional porcelain tea pot here.

*When I created this butter yellow morning dress outfit for spring afternoon tea, I wasn't just randomly selecting pretty pieces. Let me walk you through my styling thought process so you can understand how to create similarly harmonious looks yourself.

The butter yellow cropped tweed jacket paired with the matching full midi skirt creates what fashion stylists call a "broken suit" โ€“ it delivers the polish of a coordinated set while offering more visual interest than a single dress. I've chosen this particular shade of yellow because it is in fashion for spring 2025. The tweed texture adds dimension and sophistication that elevates the look.

The high-neck floral blouse wasn't selected merely for its pretty pattern. The high neckline creates a beautiful frame for your face, drawing attention upward and creating an elegant line that complements the structured crop of the jacket. The floral pattern introduces a delicate organic element that softens the tweed, creating that perfect tension between structure and fluidity that defines truly sophisticated dressing.

Now, you might wonder why I chose blue satin pumps rather than matching yellow footwear. The cool blue creates a refreshing counterpoint to the warm yellow, preventing the look from becoming one-dimensional. The satin catches light differently than the tweed, adding another textural layer. Most importantly, blue satin shoes create a visual "full stop" at the hem, anchoring the outfit with intention rather than letting it drift into predictability.

The pearl hairpins are the final element that completes this tea party outfit. Pearls bring a timeless refinement, while the pin styling feels contemporary and unfussy.

2 AIRY BLUE MORNING DRESS WITH MATCHING TOP KNOT HEADBAND AND BLACK HEELS

Now this time it is you who wants to have a cake first.

You try not to look at the upper tier and take the cake just yet. Pov, you are a host, so it's your rules. But, you are the host. So you lift the heavy teapot, and start pouring tea to the girlies and finally to yourself. The sound of tea pouring is giving ASMR.

Tea poured, you turn your attention to the sandwiches on the tiered stand before you. You take the sandwich plate out and place it on the table.

Waiting patiently for everyone to get their sandwich before you get to grab the last one left. Is it with salmon? I bet it is. You made sure to place it the closest to you. You lift your plate, hold the sandwich with your fingers and take it to your mouth. One small bite, after another and before you know, your eyes are already at the Viennese whirls.

Btw we don't eat scones in this part of Europe. Viennese whirls are more to our liking. *Don't get fooled by the name. Viennese whirls are an English invention, too. But their taste is what we like more than scones. Also, they are easier to bake and less messy to eat.

And you don't want the jam to land on your precious blue morning dress.

SHOES: Aquazzura slingback pumps - mine are sold out, but these from Amina Muaddi are similar. And these Aquazzura slingback pumps are W too.

JACKET: Self Portrait blue tweed jacket with a belt - mine is sold out, but you can shop for a cropped version here. Or better yet, get this set.

SKIRT: Self Portrait midi blue pleated skirt - shop for a similar skirt here. Now, Iโ€™m linking the skirt separately from the jacket, even though they were stitched together when I bought them. I actually bought a dress and had it divided later. My seamstress removed the skirt from the jacket - yes, you can do that. And now I have a midi blue pleated skirt and a blue tweed jacket instead of one dress.

ACCESSORIES: OK, I won't gatekeep where I bought my headband even though I don't get a commission for your purchase at Boho headwear. But ล pela, the designer, is my friend, so Iโ€™m happy to promote her business. Also, she makes the most comfortable headbands yet. I can wear the headbands she makes all day long.

TEA POT: bone china tea pot - shop for similar here.

*When I curated this airy blue morning dress, I was creating a study in monochromatic dressing that offers surprising depth through texture and structure.

Since the blue tweed jacket and the skirt came as a set, my guesswork was taken out of guessing by the designer.

The blue midi pleated skirt works in concert with the jacket while introducing a different texture and movement quality. Pleats create vertical lines that elongate the silhouette, while their natural tendency to move with your body adds an element of graceful dynamics to an otherwise static color palette.

You might wonder why I paired this outfit with black slingback pumps rather than matching blue shoes. I actually did. Pov, with dark blue, and I got mistaken when putting together the collage. But since both shoes work with the blue jacket and skirt I left it this way. All in all, the black grounds the ethereal blue tones, preventing the look from floating away into whimsy. The slingback style bridges the gap between formal pumps and more relaxed sandals โ€“ perfect for spring's transitional weather. Most importantly, they create a sophisticated punctuation mark at the hem, drawing the eye downward in a fluid line that complements the pleats of the skirt.

The matching airy blue satin top knot headband completes this composition with intention rather than afterthought. It frames the face, drawing attention upward and balancing the strong visual presence of the structured jacket. The satin texture catches light differently than the tweed, introducing another dimension of visual interest while maintaining color cohesion. Also, a headpiece is an essential part of a morning dress.

3 PINK MORNING DRESS WITH PINK STILETTO PUMPS

Spring calls for pink, and this tea outfit answers with authority. The light pink double-breasted jacket commands attention, while the dark pink faux leather midi pleated dress beneath adds an unexpected edge. The pink suede pumps complete the tonal story, creating a look that's both powerful and feminine.

SHOES: pink suede pumps - buy here.

JACKET: Pinko double breasted jacket - I bought this jacket some time ago and itโ€™s sold out, but you will like this jacket more, so itโ€™s OK.

SKIRT: MM6 Maison Margiela faux midi pleated skirt - another purchase I made some time ago. As expected, my pink one is sold out - they have it in black. But you need a pink one for this morning dress. So, shop for this skirt instead. Itโ€™s ON SALE. And in the same hue as the jacket.

*When I designed this pink morning dress for a classy spring afternoon tea, I took the light pink double-breasted jacket as the foundation, chosen specifically because of the precious buttons and soft color. The double-breasted styling introduces an element of traditional formality that honors the conventional aspects of afternoon tea, while the light pink hue softens the look.

I've deliberately paired this jacket with a faux leather pleated skirt to create contrast. This is a technique that elevates monochromatic dressing from simplistic to boujee. The faux leather grounds the lighter tone above and creating a sense of intentional color progression rather than flat uniformity.

Also, the faux leather introduces an unexpected element that prevents the pink palette from veering into overly Barbie territory.

The pleating adds movement and grace to what could otherwise be a stiff material, creating that essential tension between structure and fluidity that defines truly refined dressing.

The pink suede pumps complete this morning dress with purpose and precision. I've selected suede specifically for its matte texture, which differs from both the crisp tailoring of the jacket and the subtle sheen of the faux leather skirt. The shoes' color is carefully chosen to harmonize with both pink tones in the outfit without exactly matching either one โ€“ creating cohesion without redundancy.
